Taipei - Hannibal: Coral Reef Project - January 2009
This was a 4-week project of learning and reporting on the ecology of coral reefs. This page has kid drawings and brief facts lists, a short video of our kid presentations, a coral reef video, and the list of kids from Taiwan + their names in Chinese. Taiwan responded by sending us a DVD in the mail of their team presentations.
Coral Reef and Animals –
Corals are animals that live in warm, shallow salt water seas. When corals die, their skeletons form the layers of rock that we call the reef. The reef than becomes an ecosystem, a home to many plants and animals.
The coral reef ecosystem has many species of animal life that interact with each other and with the physical environment. The sun is the main source of energy for this ecosystem. By photosynthesis, plankton, algae, and other plants convert light energy into chemical energy. As animals eat plants or other animals, some of this energy is passed on.
Fringing reefs are next to the shorelines of continents and islands in tropical seas. Fringing reefs are commonly found in the South Pacific Hawaiian Islands, and parts of the Caribbean.
these form farther offshore. Barrier reefs form when land masses sink, and fringing reefs become separated from shorelines by wide channels. Land masses sink as because of of erosion and shifting crustal plates of the earth. Crustal plates lift or sink the seafloor and adjacent land masses. Barrier reefs are common in the Caribbean and Indo-Pacific. The Great Barrier Reef off northern Australia is the largest barrier reef in the world. It is more than 1,240 miles (2,000 km) long.
